There are some remarkable results of an arithmetic nature that have been derived from the study of the orbits of a group acting on a homogeneous space. Meanwhile, many results showing relations between geometric-dynamical and spectral properties of Riemannian manifolds have also appeared during the last century. We will provide an introduction to both topics, beginning with a review of basic concepts in dynamical systems. One of our goals is to survey a deeper relation between the geodesic flow on the modular surface and Maass cusp forms for the modular group. The main reference of this part is Enseign. Math. 66 (2020) by A.Pohl and D.Zagier. After covering this subject in as much detail as time permits, we will explore several related research topics.
