Operations Research, often shortened to OR, broadly refers to a discipline that develops and applies mathematical tools for decision-making. Its obscure name originated from the intense military efforts during the World Wars, a time when efficient decision-making for large-scale operational problems was critical. The mathematics pioneered through these efforts has since proven invaluable across various sectors in business, industry, and broader society. Today, virtually every institution throughout the world depends on OR methodologies to solve complex problems. In this seminar, I will introduce a few OR problems and explain how mathematics offers principled approaches to these problems. I will also highlight some exciting opportunities for mathematicians to engage with pressing real-life challenges.
