I will discuss some new methods for analyzing the topology of the complement of a hyperplane arrangement in complex projective space. As a consequence, we can show that the complement of a hyperplane arrangement has torsion-free fundamental group, which resolves a conjecture of P. Orlik. I will give some applications to the study of Artin-Tits groups. (Joint work with Alex Suciu)
